You + Salt Lake City
Take your conference experience out of the convention center and out into the beautiful Salt Lake City area, by signing up for a 2017 SACNAS field trip.
Students will visit the beautiful Utah State University (USU) campus, located in scenic Cache Valley, about 90 miles north of Salt Lake City. USU is the state’s land grant university, with strong undergraduate and graduate programs in many STEM disciplines. Students will be able to meet with representatives of the STEM colleges: Science, Engineering, Natural Resources, Agriculture, Education, and Humanities and Social Sciences. Tours of several departments and research laboratories will be available, tailored to the interests of field trip participants. Breakfast will be provided on the bus, and a lunch will be held on campus.
We at NSHP are invested in creating a space to bring Hispanic and Latinx physicists together to learn about cutting edge physics, create a sense of community, and to provide resources to help students and professionals connect and find mentors. An information session will be held for students interested in joining the Department of Physics & Astronomy as a transfer student or as a graduate student. This event is all-inclusive and is open and welcome to 80 undergraduate and graduate students, in particular Hispanic/Latinx students as well as supporting mentors. You are not required to be registered for 2017 SACNAS to participate in this event.
This is a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes at University of Utah labs on our main campus, Health Sciences and Huntsman Cancer Institute. A special breakout activity to ARUP Laboratories will be available to the first 15 registrants. Intended for undergraduates, pre and postdoctoral trainees, and junior faculty who are interested in STEM opportunities.
Field trip participants will first visit the unique Red Butte Creek natural area, one of the few undisturbed watersheds in the entire western United States, and learn how the creek functions when it enters the urban environment, with a focus on stormwater runoff and green infrastructure. Our field trip will then move to the Natural History Museum of Utah, where participants will be treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum including information about the unique design of the building to complement the natural beauty of the area and a discussion of how museum collections are used to study evolution and ecology.
